The police have refused to grant permission for the staging of a silent march and mini rally today in memory of Shakadan Daniel.
“The decision of the police to deny permission for this event is a blatant violation of universal human rights and guarantees assured by the constitution of our nation,” the organising committee for the march said.
“This action by the police is viewed by the committee as a deliberate effort to frustrate organisational efforts towards the staging of a successful event which is geared towards allowing citizens to express their concerns over the upkeep and management of human rights in Saint Lucia.”
The committee said the police had initially granted permission for the march on November 22, but it was cancelled due to bad weather.
The committee said despite going through the proper channels to secure permission for a new date, permission was denied and a new date of December 17 suggested.
“The planning and organising committee, even if disappointed with this turn of events, is prepared to work with the police in staging the planned march on December 17,” it said.
