Police said they have one person in custody assisting with the investigation of last night’s shooting death of a man at New Village, Castries – the first homicide of 2014.
Dead is 27-year-old Joel Nobal, otherwise called “Wells” and “Willie”, of New Village Castries.
Residents told St. Lucia News Online of hearing explosions about 9:30 pm coming from a “shack” or a shed in the area.
“Most persons thought it was a match bomb,” a resident said.
Nobal’s body was discovered minutes later.
Police said in a press release that they observed Nobal’s body seated on a bench under a shed with a gunshot wound to the head. Police said Nobal was pronounced dead on the scene by a medical practitioner.
But the drama did not end there. Residents alleged that a shootout between the police and thug/s occurred shortly after the lawmen arrived on the scene. It is unclear if the police returned fire.
“Subsequent to that incident, several shots were fired at a police officer who was in the vicinity of New Village,” the press release stated, but it gave no further details on that incident.
