St. Lucians are breathing a sigh of relief tonight after a deadly AK47 assault rifle was found by the police in Morne Du Don.
The discovery was made in an abandoned building earlier in the day.
Assault rifles typically carry greater penetrative power than regular firearms, they also carry a higher ammunition capacity and are capable of rapid fire.
The discovery of the weapon shows that criminals may well be armed enough to challenge the security forces if needs be.
