The discovery of six kilogrammes of cocaine hidden in food produce shipped to Britain has put Saint Lucia in the spotlight and the government has now come forward stating its full support for the drug investigation.

Minister of Agriculture Ezechiel Joseph said he is disappointed, stating his outright disapproval for such illegal activity, which he said has the potential to put the local industry in jeopardy.

The minister said his ministry will support a full investigation and its pleased that the drugs were found.

A search of the 93 box consignment by British Border Force officers identified approximately 6.8 kiogrammes of cocaine concealed inside nine hollowed out breadfruits.

British law enforcement were praised for the find.

“In this case, their professionalism has meant that dangerous Class A drugs have been seized and will no longer end up in our communities where they can do so much harm.”

The authorities used hi-tech search equipment to combat immigration crime and detect banned and restricted goods that smugglers attempt to bring into the United Kingdom.
