A convicted drug lord who was being held in a Martinique prison made a dramatic escape on Thursday while he was being transferred to a hospital for treatment.
Walter Perez Caruso, 60, was being transported in a van at around 9:00 in Fort-de-France when it was attacked.
Local news stations in that neighbouring island have reported that it was a commando of three heavily armed men driving two scooters. The men attempted to kill the guards but Caruso ordered them not to.
The guards were wearing bullet vests but were not armed.
This is not the first time that the Uruguayan national has escaped police custody. Just a few years he had escaped to Spain. There he was incarcerated for another drug case.
An investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of this escape.
The police are still actively looking for Caruso.
