The prisoner who sprinted out of police custody while being brought to a court house in Vieux Fort this morning, was about to appear before the court as a prosecution witness, reliable sources have told St. Lucia News Online (SNO).
Dexter Jn. Baptiste, aka Dave, is from Dennery and is believed to be in his late 20’s to early 30’s. He was on remand for another case.
The incident occurred after 10 a.m.
Sources say Jn Baptiste escaped while being escorted by about two officers from the police vehicle to the court house. At least two other prisoners were being escorted with Jn Baptiste.
Sources say Jn Baptiste was not handcuffed. It is not yet clear if the other prisoners were handcuffed.
According to the sources, the officers probably thought that it was safe not to handcuff Jn Baptiste since he was assisting the prosecution in a case.
The escape was also assisted by the fact that several prisoners were being escorted at the same time.
A photo of the escapee was not immediately available.
