Etangs Wellness Centre has been a target of a burglary, six months after resuming its operations.
A source at the institution told Saint Lucia News Online that the incident occurred between Friday and Sunday night (Feb. 28-Mar. 2).
The burglary was discovered by a staff member when she reported for work Monday morning.
Three computers, a television, a small fridge which was being utilised by the pharmacists to store medication, were among the items stolen. In addition, the burglar(s) entered the center’s storeroom and took toiletries, to include bleach and disinfectant.
A value of the total loss has not yet been ascertained.
The source said that the burglar(s) is believed to have interfered with the locks at the center, since several door frames were seemingly tampered with and there were no broken locks or windows. A fence located on the outside of the health center was also damaged.
“We asked the neighbours. They have no idea. They saw no one, they saw no vehicles. So we have absolutely no idea [who did it].”
The source told SNO that it is very likely there was more than one perpetrator involved. The police are expected at the scene to conduct further investigations, the source said.
Last August, the center reopened, after a World Bank-funded renovation project which costed approximately $360,000. This was part of the Hurricane Tomas Emergency Recovery Programme.
The wellness center offers a wide variety of services including primary health care and behavioral health services.
