One man is in stable condition at hospital and another in police custody following a “gruesome” chopping incident in Augier, Vieux Fort yesterday evening (June 7, 2017), police and relatives of the victim have said.
The victim, 42-year-old Marshall Mellius, who resides at Tete Morne, Choiseul and does landscaping work at Boucan by Hotel Chocolat in Soufrière, sustained multiple lacerations to his head and body and was admitted at St. Jude Hospital, police and relatives told St. Lucia News Online (SNO).
The suspect, who reportedly lives in Augier and is believed to be in his 20’s, was arrested this morning (June 8, 2017), relatives of the victim said.
The Vieux Fort Police Station received the report about 6:40 p.m.
The victim’s daughter, 20-year-old Nasha Cox, who resides in Augier, Vieux Fort, explained in a written statement what occurred: “My sisters had a lil fight with my cousins. They reported to the police… while home one of the girls boyfriend just start lashing my sister and I with a cutlass, out of nowhere.
“So we called police, went to the hospital and made the report. As for my father, he told me he’s not gonna fight, he only wanted to see the guy.
“While in the shower I hearing people screaming. Coming outside I seeing my father covered with blood. But they said the guy didn’t have any weapon. My (omitted for legal reasons) was the one who gave him the cutlass.”
The victim’s stepdaughter Natasha Antoine, 25, who resides in Tete Morne, Choiseul, said Mellius, who got married to her mother last year, said though she was not present at the scene, Cox informed her about the incident.
“Whilst he was at work, his daughter called him saying that a guy gave her several lashes with a cutlass so he said after work he would pass by to see what was going on…,” she said.
Antoine said the suspect and her stepfather had no known previous problems.
Relatives said Mellius is not the type of person to attack anyone violently.
“He’s a very cool and quiet guy,” Antoine said.
An Augier resident, who spoke to SNO on condition of anonymity, said she saw the injured man after the attack, and thought he would have died.
“That was gruesome my boy… I thought he died… People should learn to settle disputes without fighting with cutlass. Uncalled for,” the resident said.
