The local police is training security guards attached to schools around the island to better secure themselves and the learning institutions under their care.

The two-week training course, which is being held at the Royal Saint Lucia Police Training Academy in La Toc, Castries, is organised by the Ministry of Education, in the government’s effort to beef up school security and provide proper training to security guards, as a result of numerous bandit attacks at various schools across the island over the years.

About 25 security guards are being trained.

Work ethics and professionalism, patrol procedures, powers of arrest, dealing with anonymous calls such as bomb scares, and the use of batons and handcuffs, are some of the areas being covered in the course, Commandant of the Police Training Academy, Inspector Lescenta Desir-Dolor told DBS.

The training is being conducted at the Police Training Academy in La Toc, Castries.

She said the guards are also taught practical exercises, such as how to defend themselves in an attack.

The senior cop said the training is “very important” because it will enable the guards to perform their duties more “effectively and efficiently as security officers”.

It is possible firearms training will be included in an advanced follow-up course, Desir-Dolor said.

“Since this is a first course and they have just started, in the advanced stage, because you will have an advanced stage for them where we can include firearm training. And that will be left for the Ministry if they want to issue them with firearms,” she told DBS.

On Nov. 22, 2017, a security guard sustained a non-fatal gunshot wound when several bandits stormed into the Corinth Secondary School in the wee hours of the morning.
