A four-month-old baby was stabbed by her father during what police described as a hostage situation at a house in Marchand, Castries earlier this evening.
Reports are that the man, 26-year-old Kevin Edward, aka Tumpy, of Bishop’s Gap,Castries, held his daughter hostage for about three hours during which he threatened to harm her if he was not given what he wanted.
According to highly-placed police sources, Edward, who is believed to be mentally unstable, demanded he get medication for an illness.
“He reportedly went to a doctor for an illness and he claimed the doctor refused to give him medication for his illness,” a source said. “He claimed he just wanted the doctor to stop beating around the bush and give him his medication.”
It is reported that despite efforts to calm Edward and give into his demands, he stabbed the baby with a 10-inch knife before he was subdued by his uncle, with assistance from police officers.
A source who was at the scene told St. Lucia News Online that the baby was bleeding profusely from at least two stab wounds. The condition of the child is unknown at this time, however a police source told SNO that though the wounds look serious, it is not yet clear if they are life-threatening.
Edward is currently in police custody.
