A four-month-old baby was stabbed by her father during what police described as a hostage situation at a house in Marchand, Castries earlier this evening.

Reports are that the man, 26-year-old Kevin Edward, aka Tumpy, of Bishop’s Gap,Castries, held his daughter hostage for about three hours during which he threatened to harm her if he was not given what he wanted.

According to highly-placed police sources, Edward, who is believed to be mentally unstable, demanded he get medication for an illness.

“He reportedly went to a doctor for an illness and he claimed the doctor refused to give him medication for his illness,” a source said. “He claimed he just wanted the doctor to stop beating around the bush and give him his medication.”

It is reported that despite efforts to calm Edward and give into his demands, he stabbed the baby with a 10-inch knife before he was subdued by his uncle, with assistance from police officers.

A source who was at the scene told St. Lucia News Online that the baby was bleeding profusely from at least two stab wounds. The condition of the child is unknown at this time, however a police source told SNO that though the wounds look serious, it is not yet clear if they are life-threatening.

Edward is currently in police custody.

The mother of the four-month-old girl who was stabbed by her father in a hostage stand-off yesterday afternoon (Dec. 29), is relieved that her child’s wounds are not life-threatening.

The baby, Paris Leonce, who officially turned four months old yesterday, sustained three lacerations to the elbow, back and right side. She was admitted in stable condition in the children’s ward at Victoria Hospital. Reports are that she is “doing well”.

Police have arrested the child’s father, 26-year-old Kevin Edward, aka Tumpy, of Bishop’s Gap, Castries.

In an exclusive interview with St. Lucia News Online (SNO), the baby’s mother, 20-year-old Camille Leonce of Sarrot, Castries, explained what transpired yesterday.

Camille said she had arranged for Edward’s grandmother to pick up baby Paris at her work place in Castries in the morning and bring her by Edward in Bishop’s Gap. The grandmother was scheduled to return Paris later that afternoon.

However, sometime around 4:50 p.m., Camille got a surprise cell-phone call from Edward, who made a strange demand.

“He told me that he is sick and to come (at his house) to call his doctor to give him his medication. He said if I didn’t come he would stab the baby,” Camille said.

Again, the young mother took the threat seriously and wasted no time. After speaking to her supervisor, Camille said she reported the matter to the police.

Accompanied by three officers, Camille headed to Bishop’s Gap, hoping that her child was safe.

On arrival, she met another officer who informed her that Edward, who was armed with a long knife and an ice pick, threatened to harm the baby if his demands for medication were not met.

She said the police officers, at the time, tried in vain to persuade Edward to hand over the baby. Too frightened to witness the ordeal, Camille left the scene within five minutes of her arrival and headed for the Marchand Police Station.

Camille said she left the station after officers asked for her assistance in the negotiation. However, half-way to the scene, Camille said she decided to go no further after she heard a man mentioned that Edward stabbed the baby. This was confirmed moments later by a female officer who hugged her in tears.

According to police sources, the stand-off lasted about three hours. With the assistance of a relative, the officers were able to subdue Edward without incident.

A police source said the baby, who was bleeding profusely from her wounds, was rushed to hospital. The mother followed shortly after in a police vehicle.

Camille told SNO that when she arrived at Victoria Hospital she observed “surgery” being done on her baby.

Asked to describe how she felt at that time, Camille said she was not only scared of losing her only child, but she was in disbelief: “I was wondering why, why he had to do that to his own child.”

Camille alleged that she broke off the 17-month relationship with Edward on November 19 this year, after he told her he had acid, during an argument.

Having experienced a similar incident before, Camille took the threat seriously and reported the matter to the police who arrested Edward. During the arrest action, a knife was allegedly discovered in Edward’s bag. He spent almost a week at Custody Suites.

Asked if Edward suffers from mental illness, Camille said she is not aware of such.

“Not that I know, but I was told by his (a relative) that he had a nervous breakdown after the acid (threat) incident,” she said, adding that over the last couple of months Edward’s attitude had changed drastically. She said he appeared to be more aggressive and despondent.

A man was admitted to hospital yesterday after he allegedly drank a poisonous substance.

The man, who is in his 40s and originally from Barre Denis, was reportedly discovered by his girlfriend at their Goodlands, Castries residence, a source close to the family told St. Lucia News Online (SNO).

It is believed that the man drank a herbicide called Touch Down.

The source added that the man and his girlfriend recently had an argument, which may have led to his attempt on his own life.

The news comes on the heels of a series of suspected suicides and attempted suicides across the island since the start of the festive season.

A 73-year-old Augier resident, Cletus Marc, passed away yesterday at St. Jude Hospital after allegedly ingesting gramoxone on Sunday.

On Christmas Day (Thursday, Dec. 25), a Fond Assau resident was rushed to Victoria Hospital after he was suspected of drinking gramoxone. He was admitted to the hospital and is currently in stable condition.

On Friday morning at around 1:45, a man in his 20s, Goddard Albert, was found hanging underneath a house in Barre Denis.

On Sunday, a man attempted to hang himself in Barre Denis, two days after his distant neighbour, Goddard Albert, aka Debo, died from suspected suicide.

Reports are that the man was stopped after he was discovered by his girlfriend’s younger sister with the rope, getting ready to carry out the act Sunday morning underneath a house.

“They had time to remove the rope from his neck,” a resident of the community said.

Hannah Defoe.

NORTH LONDON TODAY - The death of an aspiring dancer on a once-in-a-lifetime holiday was the result of manslaughter, an inquest has concluded.

The Advertiser has learned that the St Lucian inquest into the death of Hannah Defoe in a luxury resort on the island on July 25 2012 has concluded with a verdict of manslaughter as decided by a jury.

The inquest in Vieux Fort, St. Lucia started in February 2014 and has taken almost a year to hear evidence from all parties concerned with the tragedy.

Hannah was electrocuted and died while swimming in the pool in the luxury resort of Juliette’s Lodge in Vieux Fort in the south of the paradise island.

Giving evidence to the St Lucian inquest via video link in November her aunt Janet Defoe, who was on holiday with her niece at the time, told the inquest jury that Hannah had been swimming in the pool when suddenly she called and sank beneath the water.

She told of repeated attempts to rescue her niece from the pool – but the water was inexplicably live and no one was able to dive in to save her without themselves suffering electric shocks.

Reading from her witness statement she told the jury and Magistrate Robert Innocent: “I ran to the pool and when I got there I saw Hannah’s body stretched out at the bottom of the pool. I jumped into the pool to rescue her.

“As soon as I jumped in I felt a fuzzy feeling over my whole body.”

The British inquest into her death has been repeatedly postponed while the authorities waited for the St Lucian inquest to conclude.

However, now that there is a verdict in the island’s own investigations it is expected that the British inquest can proceed.

Speaking to the Advertiser Hope Defoe, Hannah’s mother, said: “We are very encouraged by this verdict as we were beginning to feel that it was all a charade.

“We are very hopeful that criminal proceedings will follow but have been warned that this could take years.”

St. Lucian national Lloyd Roberts Maloni yesterday appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, charged with overstaying his permitted time in Guyana.

Represented by attorney-at-law, Mr. Peter Hugh, Maloni pleaded not guilty to the charge when particulars were read to him. His attorney made application for reasonable bail, informing the court that his client is a father of a minor child.

Police Prosecutor Michael Grant opposed bail on the ground that his client is a flight risk, since he is a St. Lucia national.

Maloni was nevertheless granted up to 10 am yesterday to post $50,000 bail, and the matter was transferred before Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond for January 7.

Not actual van.

Motor vehicle thieves have continued their ‘trade’ early in the New Year.

A businessman, who prefers not to use his name, has reported that his white panel van, registration number PC 8196, was stolen from his residence in Chabot this morning, between 1:00 and 6:00.

The vehicle had no security alarm.

He said the van was his main means of transportation for his business, Balcony Restaurant, in Castries. He used the vehicle for catering and delivery services, as well as transporting food for the restaurant.

The businessman said the van is in excellent condition, having bought it about two months ago. He is praying that his vehicle will not be scrapped and is appealing to the perpetrators to consider his plight.

He is offering a reward to anyone who can provide information that leads to the recovery of his vehicle. He can be reached at 720-0956, or persons can call the nearest police station.

This is the second reported theft in recent times of a white panel van belonging to a business.

In late November 2014, bandits stole a white Toyota panel van bearing registration number PK1389 n Bois D’Orange. The vehicle, which belongs to a business in the area, was discovered stolen at about 2 a.m.

The driver of the vehicle Lambert Popo had told St. Lucia News Online (SNO) that the vehicle didn’t have an alarm.

There have been a number of recent reports about vehicles being stolen in different parts of the island.

Investigators have told SNO that stolen vehicles are mainly used for crime, particularly shootings, kidnappings and transportation of illegal drugs. Vehicles are also scrapped for parts.

Gangsters firebomb house in Bois Patat

The Castries police are investigating a firebombing attack on a house in the Bois Patat/Morne Du Don area in the wee hours of this morning.

Reports are that kerosene-bottle bombs, also known as Molotov cocktails, were thrown at the house of one Sherline Williams, a mother of three children, in Bois Patat around 12:30 a.m.

No one was hurt, but the walls of the house was scorched and some clothes were burnt during the attack.  The flames were reportedly extinguished by Williams and a family member.

Police sources believe the attack may have stemmed from an ongoing gang feud between men from Bois Patat/Morne Du Don and Wilton’s Yard.

A police source told St. Lucia News Online that Williams may not have been the intended target, as she has been living peacefully in the community for many years.

“When they can’t get one they will get someone closest to their intended target. It could have been worse,” the source added.

No one has been arrested, but investigations continue.

A resident of the area told SNO that the police need to step up their patrols in the area, especially after midnight. The resident further stated that violence occurs almost every week in Bois Patat and adjoining communities, but the incidents are seldom reported by the media or the authorities.

“Bois Patat, Grave Yard (Wilton’s Yard) and Morne Du Don are a hot bed of crime and poverty and the government, the politicians and the police do not seem to care. It’s like ‘let them fight and kill one another’. But this is wrong because not everyone living in these areas are criminals. There are law-abiding citizens living here who work every day for a honest living. Police officers live here. They all know what’s going on, they all know the people behind the attacks, but nothing is being done,” the resident added.

Kennedy Joseph showing his injuries.

An attempt by two bandits to rob a bus early this morning with eight people on board proved futile when the driver fought back valiantly.

Kennedy Joseph, a 42-year-old carpenter from Morne Jacque, Choiseul, sustained a wound to the arm that required three stitches, but no one else was hurt in the attack that occurred around 1:30 a.m. along the Vieux Fort-Laborie Highway.

Joseph, who was treated at St. Jude Hospital and released, explained what happened in an exclusive interview with St. Lucia News Online (SNO) today.

Joseph said he was on his way to Laborie with seven other people on board – his girlfriend, her two children (males, ages 17 and 11), her father and mother, and two aunts – when a white “Rover” car overtook his slow-moving bus and “cut across”. Joseph said he had “moved aside” when his vehicle was being overtaken.

Joseph

To avoid hitting the car, Joseph said he stopped the bus suddenly. As the car blocked his way, Joseph said he noticed a man, with no mask, alight from the car and approached the bus and opened the sliding door in a rough way.

Noticing that the man was up to no good, Joseph drove off immediately, but the bus door fell off.

Joseph said he then stopped the vehicle to retrieve the door, with help from his girlfriend’s father. By this time, Joseph said they were attacked by two men from the white car, who started to throw punches.

Joseph didn’t back down. He said he fought back. During the altercation, he was stabbed in the elbow area.

Realising that they stood no chance against Joseph and his father-in-law, the men ran back to their car made “two U turns”, and “knocked” his bus and another car as they escaped.

Joseph said the bus, which he borrowed from a friend to transport the family to the social gathering in Vieux Fort town, sustained damages to the bumper and head lights.

He said the women and children in the vehicle were terrified at what happened.

Joseph said the men who attacked him were seen at the barbeque earlier.

“All the time they were watching us opposite Hobbies… they were looking in their car trunk,” Joseph said, adding that the men were obviously following them all this time.

He said none of the men wore masks and he was not sure what type of weapon was used in the attack. He noted that the men didn’t ask for money or anything, though he didn’t give them a chance to ask.

The Laborie Police Station confirmed that the incident occurred. One person is assisting police with their investigations.

A man, who is believed to be mentally unstable, was arrested yesterday (Friday, January 2) after he was allegedly “caught in the act” with a goat in Desruisseaux, Micoud, highly-placed sources have told St. Lucia News Online (SNO).

The man is currently in custody at the Micoud Police Station while the allegation is being investigated. If sufficient evidence is gathered, the man may be charged with bestiality or indecent exposure.

The perpetrator was reportedly caught naked with the animal in bushes near the complainant’s home. SNO obtained a photo of the man with the goat.

“The owner of the goat took the pic, went to the cops, who came to apprehend him, still in the act,” a resident from the community told SNO, adding that this is not the first time the man was caught in such a manner with an animal.

The resident said the man is “mentally unstable”. SNO will provide more information when it is available.

This is not the first time a man has been arrested for such an allegation.

In late October 2013, police confirmed that a young man was arrested for having sex with a sheep in Bexon.

The man, believed to be in his early 20′s, faced a charge of bestiality.

Reports on SNO at the time stated that the police was scheduled to collect fluid from the sheep to test for semen.

“He was reported because two people picking coconuts watched him and came to call us. He go down on his knees. When I personally asked him, he said someone that send him to do that,” a source had told St. Lucia News Online.

Other similar cases have been reported in other Caribbean islands. In Dominica, a few years ago, a man was convicted for having sex with cows, while in Guyana a man was charged, having caught having sex with an animal. He was also suspected of having sex with all the animals at the residence, including goats and chickens.

Octave said it is not unusual for the child to be sent on errands nearby.

A Desruisseaux man who was arrested after he was allegedly “caught in the act” with a goat on Friday last, has been released from police custody.

Police press officials told St. Lucia News Online (SNO) that the man was released today. However, the matter is still being investigated.

A police source also confirmed that the animal was taken to a vet, where it was examined and semen extracted. It is alleged that the owner of the goat was advised to “put the animal down” (kill it), according to a source.

The accused is 50 years old and is said to be mentally unstable.

If sufficient evidence is gathered, the man could be charged with bestiality or indecent exposure. He was reportedly caught naked with the animal in bushes near the complainant’s home.

NO JOKING MATTER: Goat owner’s plans sidelined after bestiality act

Not actual picture of molested goat.

After discovering a naked man with his pregnant goat on Friday, January 2, 2015, a Desruisseaux, Micoud resident said he is discouraged to establish a fully-fledged goat farming business out of sheer fear for the safety of the animals.

Kensley Neptune, also known as Kay, is a regular bus driver on the Vieux Fort-Castries route, but he had big plans of supplementing his income by expanding his goat-rearing into a business enterprise, based on the demand for local goat meat. However, after last week’s incident, he no longer believes his animals are safe.

“I was supposed to build a pen and make it a business… have a little garden, but all that is messed up,” Neptune, a father of one, told St. Lucia News Online (SNO) on Monday.

Neptune said the situation is no laughing matter.  ”It’s discouraging. I don’t have anymore motivation,” he said.

The 40-year-old, who owns two female goats and one male, explained that on Friday at about 3:50 p.m. he caught a man naked with his pregnant goat on family land near his house.

Neptune said the goat was tied to a tree by a long rope, but the perpetrator skilfully tied the rope in a way that the goat would be closer to the tree. The man was at one point kneeling behind the goat in a ‘back-shot’ position.

“He tied the goat to a tree by the neck, shortening the rope and let the loose part hang. He also tied the goat’s back legs. I found him stooping behind the goat. He was naked,” he explained.

Neptune said after quickly taking pictures of the man with his cell phone for evidence, he confronted the man physically to prevent him from taking further advantage on the animal.

“I beat him,” he said, “I gave him a few lashes with my cutlass and he ran.”

The man escaped totally naked. Neptune then brought the photos and the man’s clothes to the Micoud Police Station and made a report.

When Neptune returned to the scene with the police, the man was long gone. He was however nabbed not long after – and joined the goat in police custody.

“When they got him he had clothes on him already,” Neptune noted.

The following day (Saturday, Jan. 3), a veterinarian examined the goat at the police station.  Neptune said the doctor discovered that the goat showed signs of recent penetration.

The 50-year-old perpetrator was released from police custody on the morning of Monday, Jan. 5. Neptune did not proceed with the matter. He said he was advised that the man is mentally ill and bringing the matter to court would be a waste of his time and money.

Neptune said the ‘victim’ was scheduled to give birth next month. He said the veterinarian told him a “flush” procedure will be done on the goat. Though Neptune does not understand what the “flush” procedure means, he said it is likely that efforts will be made to save the unborn kids before putting the mother down.

He however plans to keep the two other goats. He does not believe they were sexually assaulted.

In light of the incident, and the fact that the perpetrator is freed, Neptune said he has already carried out plans to safeguard his goats. He has not only tied the animals closer to his house, he is now bringing them grass.

And it is no easy task.

“It’s really hard for me. I am a bus driver. I leave my house minutes to six on a week day. Now I have to cut grass from in the evening for the goats,” he said.

Despite encouragement from others not to give up, Neptune said he does not trust his goats out of his sight or too far from his home, a move that could jeopardise the nutrition of the goats and plans to expand his goat-rearing business plan.

Neptune said he bought a “mother goat” in November 2013 and it gave birth to two kids in February 14, 2014 (on Valentine’s Day).

Meantime, police sources said investigation will continue, but that does not ease the fears of Neptune, who confirmed that he has heard rumours that the perpetrator is notorious for committing bestiality.  Other residents also confirmed these rumours.

One resident told SNO that she is not surprised because “it is something he does all the time”.

A law enforcement source is however not pleased with the outcome of the matter. The source believes the crime is just as serious as the rape of a human being, and is urging other goat owners to be on the lookout now that the offender is back on the streets.

“Sex with an animal is a crime against the State and the matter should have been taken to the court. The police don’t need the approval of the animal owner to prosecute. It looks like an excuse for police to make a short cut with a case. You don’t need the owner of the animal to want to go to court,” the source opined.
