While the Mission of Seventh Day Adventists (SDA) is still counting their losses, following a major break-in at their Castries office, it has been discovered that the bandits took some US$1,000 and over E$500.

SDA Mission’s Chief Financial Officer, Rose Mary Desir, told St. Lucia News Online (SNO) on Sunday that while the bandits managed to escape with cash, they also ransacked and destroyed several items.

Desir said she was informed of the break-in around 4 a.m. Sunday after an office assistant went to the office to prepare for normal services and discovered that the place had been ransacked.

It was later discovered that a partition to the accountant’s office was broken, a filing cabinet and two doors were damaged, and a cupboard which contained a safe was also destroyed during the break-in.

Desir told SNO that the telephones and computers in the building are not working, because of the damages made to the partition where the connection was fitted.

This is not the first time that the SDA mission office has experienced such an incident. Desir said during the 2016 Easter weekend, bandits also attempted to break into that same office.

The church executive believes that the bandits had an ample amount of time to carry out their illegal act, because there are no residents close to the office and only one church next door.

Police have launched an investigation into threats made against veteran journalist, Rick Wayne.

Reports are that a caller to Wayne’s show, “Talk” aired on DBS on Thursday, made threatening remarks to the journalist, while stating that if the opposition wins the election, there would be civil unrest.

The caller also reportedly told Wayne on Thursday that he is a “bad boy”, who has guns, urging the talk show host and publisher to desist from speaking in the way that he does.

But Wayne who seem less bothered by the comments made to him on live television, told sections of the media that it is just an expression of an angry citizen “speaking his mind.”

The journalist said that the situation should be looked at from the point of view that free speech is an important constitutional right and everyone should be allowed to express themselves freely.

Popular radio personality, Sam “Juke Bois” Flood, was recently threatened by an unknown individual who called in to a live radio programme he hosted on Caribbean HOT FM.

Flood confirmed with St. Lucia News Online (SNO) on Wednesday that the incident occurred on Tuesday evening around 7:21 p.m.

He said the male caller told him, “I’m going to block you on the road” and he immediately disconnected the call.

The radio journalist said this is the first time he has ever been threatened by someone on air.

Flood told SNO that he is convinced that it was politically motivated, stating “they probably having their cronies to call and try to intimidate media workers who are influential in society.”

“I will not allow myself to be intimidated by nobody,” he asserted.

Flood said he has not made a report with the police and doesn’t intend to do so, because nothing seems to come out from the so-called investigations, as it relates to media workers being threatened.

Just last week, veteran journalist, Rick Wayne, was threatened on live television. Wayne was at the time hosting his weekly programme ‘Talk’ on DBS on Thursday, April 28.

The caller reportedly told Wayne that he is a “bad boy”, who has guns, urging the talk show host and newspaper publisher to desist from speaking in the way that he does.

That matter caught the attention of the police and is currently being investigated.

TIPS TO AVOID CHEQUE FRAUD

Sometimes criminals will create fraudulent cheques or change the name or amount of a legitimate cheque. This is known as Cheque fraud. Though a Cheque is a useful instrument for banking, if it falls into the wrong hands, it could cause you inconvenience and loss.

There are a number of simple steps that you can take to protect yourself from cheque fraud.

  • Keep your cheque in a secure location.
  • Review your monthly bank statement or regularly check your transactions through online or telephone banking. Keep your contact details registered with the Bank regularly updated. If you see transactions you didn’t do or get alerts about unusual activity, notify your bank immediately and they will investigate.
  • You should never sign a cheque leaf until you are about to hand it over to the person who is being paid.
  • If you have to mail a cheque out or have it sent out, make sure that you cross the cheque or make it an account payee only cheque by drawing two lines at the top left corner of the check and writing ‘Account Payee’.
  • If you cancel a cheque, you should dispose it off properly after crossing out the cheque number and MICR code.
  • If you close your account, destroy any unused cheque.
  • Consider using electronic payments such as online payments, wire transfers or direct deposit of payments.
  • If you receive a cheque that doesn’t look legitimate, ask for a different form of payment.
  • When you receive a cheque always ask for identification and verify that the identification document received is legitimate.
  • Record all information on the identification document provided and take a picture of the said document.
  • Ask for more than one identification document and if possible have another individual take description of person issuing the cheque and have surveillance cameras installed at business place.
  • If you believe that you have lost a cheque, you should inform your bank as soon as possible. They could stop payment on the lost cheque by tracking down the cheque number.

Twelve-year-old gives birth in T&T, cops launch investigation

TRINIDAD GUARDIAN – Police have opened an investigation into who was responsible for the sexual abuse of a 12-year-old girl who recently gave birth to a baby boy at the San Fernando General Hospital.

The probe is, however, being complicated by the fact that the police now have two different reports of how the Form One student came to be impregnated. One of them is that she became pregnant by one of two family members who were sexually abusing her. The other is that she was raped by a man who had gone to their home to conduct repairs.

policeThe incident has been confirmed by hospital officials and officers from the Children’s Protection Unit of T&T Police Service.

The T&T Guardian was told that when the girl became impregnated she was living with her mother, who is nursing a medical condition, and father. But after giving birth to a baby boy at the hospital on April 23, she and her baby moved in with other relatives.

The police were tipped off that the child had for several months been a victim of sexual abuse by two male relatives, but her family tried to cover it up. She was reportedly taken out of school and arrangements were made for her to have a home delivery. However, the child developed complications at home and had to be rushed to the hospital, officers were told. In keeping with hospital’s policy, officials contacted the police because the girl is a minor.

But when the child was interviewed last week by Children Protection Unit officers she related a totally different story about her pregnancy, one which involved sexual assault.

The child told them that sometime ago, a stranger pulled up in front their house with a car. She was alone at home. The man, she said, told her he came to check the meter box. However, he soon dragged her inside the house and raped her. She told the investigators he threatened to kill her if she said anything. The girl said she told no one she was pregnant until she was in her third trimester.

Detectives are investigating all angles, including the veracity of her second story, as they continue their investigations. Contacted yesterday TTPS Victim and Witness Support Unit head Margaret Sampson-Brown said she was aware of the report, having been informed via the media a few days ago.

“I did seek to have a conversation with the Victim Support officer and the matter has been referred to the Children’s Protection Unit and the Children’s Authority.” She said she was not aware of the details, but she said her organisation was standing by and ready to provide any assistance requested.

ak47-wit-wooden-polymer-furnitureSt. Lucians are breathing a sigh of relief tonight after a deadly AK47 assault rifle was found by the police in Morne Du Don.

The discovery was made in an abandoned building earlier in the day.

Assault rifles typically carry greater penetrative power than regular firearms, they also carry a higher ammunition capacity and are capable of rapid fire.

The discovery of the weapon shows that criminals may well be armed enough to challenge the security forces if needs be.

No one is above the law – La Corbiniere on police arrest

$

p_court

The recent arrest of a police officer in a strip club investigation, points to transparency within the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF), Minister of National Security La Corbiniere has said.

La Corbiniere boasted that the police have been able to do their work in a transparent manner and seeks to ensure that those who break the law are dealt with in the same manner as anyone else.

“Not because this person is a member of the Force they are not going to act,” he stated.

The minister said he will not cast any judgment, but said once the officer broke the law, he must face the necessary consequences. La Corbiniere said the courts will now make a determination as to his fate.

A police officer identified as Alexander Jules and a female by the name of Lisa Callendar, were arrested for the offence of employing persons without a work permit.

On April 28, police conducted an operation at their night club located in the North and arrested two females from Dominica, three from Jamaica, one from Barbados and four from the Dominican Republic.

The foreign females were subsequently charged for the offence of working without a valid work permit and granted bail after they made an appearance at the First District Court.

La Corbiniere deems recovery of assault rifle ‘troubling’

Minister Victor La Corbiniere

The discovery of a deadly AK47 assault rifle in Morne Du Don has created some level of uneasiness and started a discussion with regards to what these weapons could be used for.

National Security Minister, Victor La Corbiniere, said while he would not like to comment much on the issue, given the ongoing police investigation, he did admit that it is troubling.

Nevertheless, the minister said the police will continue to be proactive to deal with all aspects of criminality on the island and he would expect the Police Chief to address this issue at some point.

“It is always troubling. I am the Minister of National Security, so I know the landscape and I know what is here and what we have to do to bring in the guns from the streets,” he explained.

But La Corbiniere said it is no secret that high powered weapons are on the island, stating that the police are strategizing all the time, and targeting individuals who they believe have these weapons.

“But it’s a cat and mouse game. The criminals are the more educated type of criminals. They are not the average criminal that you saw 30 years ago. They too are strategizing to try to beat law enforcement.”

However, the minister pointed out that some progress is being made, although “it’s slow and painful”. But the Police Force, he said, continues to be very committed in trying to ensure safety for citizens.

La Corbiniere had said that the importation of illegal firearms here, is mostly linked to the drug trade.

The high power rifle was discovered by police in an abandoned building on Monday.
