The Ministry of Education has again promised to provide security for the St Mary’s College following two robberies, the last incident occurring on Thursday afternoon.
Education Minister Dr. Gale Rigobert made the announcement on Friday following meetings with the principal and staff, and students.
“We have in the short term identified additional manpower to provide security services,” she told the media.
However, Rigobert noted that her ministry has started discussions with the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force to look at a long term plan to address the issue before it gets out of control.
Rigobert said she wants a strategy to deter bandits from attacking children and is focused on ensuring that a holistic review of safety and security at the college is completed.
The minister has condemned the attacks on students calling the alleged robbers “unscrupulous, evil minded, cowardly individuals.”
A few students of the college were attacked and robbed on the college field on Thursday afternoon.
This is the second such incident in two weeks at the school.
A student was robbed of his pair of shoes and was forced to walk through a short cut barefooted to alert other students and teachers at the school.
The students have helped to identify a possible suspect in the recent robbery.
