PRESS RELEASE – Crime prevention means being aware of your environment and remaining alert to situations that could make you vulnerable to crime.
We cannot list specific measures that will protect you from every threatening situation, which may arise.
Instead, we hope to teach you how to think “Crime Prevention” in day-to-day living
Suicide is the act or an instance of taking one’s own life voluntarily and intentionally especially by a person of years of discretion and of sound mind.
The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 1 million people die each year from suicide.
It can be scary when a friend or loved one is thinking about suicide.
Here are some tips that can assist you if you are ever faced with this situation
1. Ask: if you have a friend/relative who is talking about suicide or showing other warning signs, don’t wait to see if he or she starts to feel better. Do not ignore, talk about it. Most of the time, people who are considering suicide are willing to discuss it if someone asks them out of concern and care.
2. Listen: Listen to your friend/relative without judging and offer reassurance that you’re there and you care. If you think your friend/relative is in immediate danger, stay close — make sure he or she isn’t left alone.
3. Tell: Even if you’re sworn to secrecy and you feel like you’ll be betraying your friend/relative if you tell, you should still get help. Share your concerns with an adult you trust as soon as possible
4. Call: Call the suicide prevention help line at telephone numbers 4582433 and 4525433.
Remember it is an offence for anyone to attempt to take their own life according to the Criminal Code of St Lucia 2008. So you should call the Police and make a formal report.
This has been your weekend crime tips. Do have an enjoyable and safe weekend.
