Police have charged a 33-year-old woman for a pepper-spray attack at a church on Sunday that left three people injured, police sources have confirmed.
Anthea Martial, a resident of Richfond, has been charged with casting or throwing a noxious substance based on Section 101 (2) of the Criminal Code.
If found guilty, Martial faces a maximum 10 years in prison and a minimum three years, according to the Code.
Police and multiple eyewitness said Martial pepper-sprayed Kernisha Flavien, 30, of Aux Lyon. Flavien was reportedly the intended target.
The incident occurred about 9:40 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 15, shortly after services concluded at the St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in La Ressorce, Dennery.
Two other people – a woman who is a cancer patient and a man who tried to part the fight – were caught in the crossfire, Flavien had told St. Lucia News Online (SNO) in an exclusive interview.
All three church members had to seek medical attention.
The attack allegedly stemmed from a war of words between Flavien, Martial and other females on Facebook that began in 2016.
Martial has since been granted on her own recognizance, police said.
