Police are preparing to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape of prisoner and state witness Dexter Jn Baptiste on Monday, Jan. 16, 2017, a well-placed source have told St. Lucia News Online (SNO).
The source said the matter is subject to an “internal investigation” and “will be” investigated.
It is unlikely that the police officers who were on duty when Jn Baptiste escaped will be suspended until the investigation is completed, the source said.
Meanwhile, Jn Baptiste, who is from Dennery, remains on the run.
He escaped around 10 a.m. Monday while being escorted with other prisoners from a police vehicle to a court house in Vieux Fort.
Reliable police sources told SNO that Jn Baptiste was not handcuffed.
According to the sources, the officers probably thought that it was safe not to handcuff Jn Baptiste since he was assisting the prosecution in a case. He was on remand for a very “serious” offence, the sources say.
The escape was probably assisted by the fact that several prisoners were being escorted at the same time, the sources had said.
At least two officers were escorting the prisoners when Jn Baptiste sprinted off.
