St. Lucian-born Brooklyn resident Kendal Felix was ordered held without bond when he was arraigned in the Brooklyn Criminal Court today, Thursday, May 1.
According to the New York Daily News, Felix, 26, who was “dressed in black from head to toe”, said nothing and did not enter a plea during his minute-long arraignment.
Felix was among two men taken into custody on Wednesday, April 30 by the New York Police Department (NYPD) for the killing of 39-year-old realtor, Menachem Stark, media reports say.
Stark was kidnapped on Jan. 2, 2014 and his partly burned body was found two days later in a trash bin.
Felix, who is from Dennery and attended Micoud Secondary, was charged with second-degree murder but the other suspect’s name was not released. A third suspect is being sought by the police.
Several St. Lucians living in New York contacted St. Lucia News Online about the news and the impact it has had on the St. Lucian community there.
“He’s a party friend of mine… it (the news) is all over Facebook. It’s a total shock to most of us up in New York. They still have two others in questioning,” one of the St. Lucian residents told St. Lucia News Online.
Another told SNO: “I live in the US and is disgusted by a crime committed by one of them (St. Lucians).”
The New York Daily News reported: “Two friends the Brooklyn man identified as accomplices were also being questioned by cops, sources said. Felix ‘admits they wanted to rob him,’ one source said. ‘They weren’t thinking about killing him.’ All three were linked to the crime by evidence found in the van that police believe was used to kidnap the 39-year-old Stark and carry him to his death, the sources said. Two of the suspects were also linked to a cellphone that was found attached to the undercarriage of Stark’s car in the days after the murder, a source said. The phone belongs to one of the suspects, and there were calls made to it by another of the suspects, the source said. The trio of toughs apparently believed Stark was loaded — unaware that he was actually up to his ears in debt.”
