Saint Lucia is looking to Jamaica for help to boost its cybercrime-fighting abilities.
National Security Minister Justice Hermangild Francis has said that as soon as the budget is approved, Jamaica will send in a team of experts to look at implementing a cybercrime lab on the island.
This announcement comes in the wake of a recentincrease in the circulation of pornographic videos over social media.
One of the more recent videos was nine minutes long and showed a woman, with her hands and feet tied, having sex under the influence of drugs, with a number of males in her company. Persons who had been sharing the viral pornographic video were told by law officials that they will face prosecution if caught.
Francis said that in light of these occurrences, the implementation of the cyber forensics lab is of utmost urgency to his ministry.
“Jamaica has a very good cybercrime lab. IMPACS have decided that we’re gonna do courses, RSS is gonna be doing courses, but I don’t think that I can wait based on the proliferation of what we have been seeing,” he said.
The minister took the opportunity to speak on the issue of proper family structure and how the lack of it is the likely cause of the recent pornographic flare-up.
“Persons sometimes talk about crime and we talk about people not working and all these sorts of things but … as long as you don’t have a strong family structure these things are gonna happen,” he said.
The minister further spoke about how different society seems today compared to the days he grew up in Marchand. He said that back then an entire community raised a child but things are quite different today.
“The adults there made sure that you were doing what you’re supposed to do. So if you were stepping out of line they would correct you and you know you don’t dare go and tell your mom that you were corrected because you don’t want to be corrected a second time. Now that doesn’t happen. If you correct a child on the street you better be careful that the mother of father doesn’t come back at you; and that’s what’s happening. That’s the reality,” he added.
